Daniel 1 • Decide. Ask. Trust. Receive.
Purposed in His Heart Lab
See what Daniel decided before the king’s table, sort the blessings the Lord gave, practise answering like Daniel in a real situation, and shape a poster page about the Word of Wisdom.
Start with the verse. Where did Daniel make his decision, and when?
See Daniel’s choice
What did Daniel decide, and how did he ask?
Daniel and his friends were captives in Babylon, and the king gave them his own food and wine. In Daniel’s day Israel lived the law of Moses, which included laws about food. Read Daniel 1:8–14, then answer from the verses.
“But Daniel _____ in his heart that he would not defile himself” (Daniel 1:8)
How did Daniel raise it with the prince of the eunuchs? (Daniel 1:8)
What did the prince of the eunuchs fear? (Daniel 1:10)
What did Daniel propose? (Daniel 1:12–13)
Answer each question from Daniel 1:8–13. You can change any answer.
Sort the blessings
How did the Lord bless them, and how does He bless us?
Read Daniel 1:15–20 and Doctrine and Covenants 89:18–21. The Lord has revealed a law of health for our day too, the Word of Wisdom. Decide whether each phrase describes a physical or a spiritual blessing.
“at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer” (Daniel 1:15)
“Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams” (Daniel 1:17)
“shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones” (Doctrine and Covenants 89:18)
“shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures” (Doctrine and Covenants 89:19)
“shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint” (Doctrine and Covenants 89:20)
First complete activity 1, then sort the blessings.
Answer like Daniel
What could help in a real situation?
Choose one situation. None of them is about you: think about what could help the person in it.
The situation:
Mateo likes a challenge. One day his friends challenge him to drink alcohol at a party. (This is the example in Lesson 142.)
What from Daniel 1 could help Mateo most?
What could Mateo do that is most like Daniel?
At a friend’s house someone kindly offers a cup of coffee or tea. It seems a small thing, and everyone else is having one. (Lesson 142 asks how you would respond to “something more common like coffee or tea”.)
What from Daniel 1 could help here?
What could someone say that is most like Daniel?
A friend says, “Your church just gives you a list of things you are not allowed.” (Lesson 142 notes that people who do not yet understand the Word of Wisdom might see it as unnecessary restrictions.)
What from the scriptures could help you answer?
Which answer is most like Daniel’s?
First complete activity 2, then choose one situation.
Take it to the journal
What would your poster say?
Lesson 142 asks you to imagine making a poster about the Word of Wisdom, with a statement of truth on it. Choose one truth and one scripture to shape your page. All of them are true.
A truth for my poster:
A scripture for my poster:
